Steer Axle for Forklifts - The classification of an axle is a central shaft intended for revolving a wheel or a gear. Where wheeled vehicles are concerned, the axle itself may be fixed to the wheels and turn along with them. In this particular situation, bushings or bearings are provided at the mounting points where the axle is supported. On the other hand, the axle may be connected to its surroundings and the wheels may in turn revolve around the axle. In this particular situation, a bushing or bearing is placed inside the hole inside the wheel to be able to enable the gear or wheel to revolve around the axle.

With trucks and cars, the term axle in some references is utilized casually. The term generally refers to the shaft itself, a transverse pair of wheels or its housing. The shaft itself revolves together with the wheel. It is usually bolted in fixed relation to it and called an 'axle shaft' or an 'axle.' It is also true that the housing surrounding it which is generally known as a casting is also called an 'axle' or sometimes an 'axle housing.' An even broader sense of the word means every transverse pair of wheels, whether they are attached to one another or they are not. Therefore, even transverse pairs of wheels inside an independent suspension are often known as 'an axle.'

In a wheeled vehicle, axles are an important part. With a live-axle suspension system, the axles work to be able to transmit driving torque to the wheel. The axles even maintain the position of the wheels relative to one another and to the vehicle body. In this system the axles should likewise be able to bear the weight of the motor vehicle along with any load. In a non-driving axle, like for instance the front beam axle in some two-wheel drive light trucks and vans and in heavy-duty trucks, there would be no shaft. The axle in this situation serves only as a steering part and as suspension. Various front wheel drive cars have a solid rear beam axle.

The axle serves just to transmit driving torque to the wheels in various kinds of suspension systems. The position and angle of the wheel hubs is part of the operating of the suspension system seen in the independent suspensions of new sports utility vehicles and on the front of various brand new cars and light trucks. These systems still have a differential but it does not have connected axle housing tubes. It could be attached to the vehicle frame or body or also could be integral in a transaxle. The axle shafts then transmit driving torque to the wheels. The shafts in an independent suspension system are like a full floating axle system as in they do not support the vehicle weight.

Last but not least, in reference to a vehicle, 'axle,' has a more vague definition. It means parallel wheels on opposing sides of the motor vehicle, regardless of their mechanical connection kind to one another and the motor vehicle body or frame.
